This week, the third BMW software update for the year will be released with new features and support for more than two million vehicles. BMW Remote Software Upgrades offer comprehensive improvements to key functions of the vehicle, as well as the ability to bring new digital products to the vehicle over-the air. This also ensures that software is always up-to-date. The BMW Group is offering its third over-the-air upgrade this year – this time for around two million BMW vehicles worldwide. By the end of 2021, the world’s largest upgrade-compatible fleet will be on the roads, with over 2.5 million connected BMW vehicles, from conventionally powered cars to plug-in hybrids to the fully-electric BMW.
The BMW Group’s most extensive Remote Software Upgrade campaign to date will begin with the rollout of the latest version of BMW Operating System 7 (Ver. 21-07) on October 11, 2021. The campaign will start in Germany with additional markets following in stages. The comprehensive Remote Software Upgrade campaign will be focused on improving and expanding driver assistance functions. Spotify will now allow you to listen to podcasts and enhance your BMW Connected Music entertainment experience. M Sound Control will give BMW M3 and M4 owners a new driving experience. These new features offer customers more convenience, increased safety, and simply more Sheer Driving Pleasure.
Upgrade your driving pleasure – RSU Version 21-07
This campaign features a new feature: My BMW app users will be able to download the version only during the first two week. All customers will be able to download the upgrade as an automatic download from their vehicle. My BMW connects customers with their vehicle through their smartphone. It turns it into an intelligent interface. The new Remote Software Upgrade can be downloaded to your vehicle. Additionally, the app makes it easy for you to plan trips and schedule service appointments. The My BMW app, which will be available starting in November 2021, will provide functional enhancements to the field of electromobility as well as information about the vehicle’s status.
The current update will allow more than 30 models and over 1.6 million vehicles worldwide to update their software via the internet. You can also roll out the current version (Ver. 21-07) to almost 400,000. This vehicle must have a software version that allows for upgrades (Ver. 20-07; this can be easily achieved by installing the prior version.

New and enhanced functions
- Avoid unnecessary steering interventions by using the Improvements to Lane Departure Alert on narrowing roads without centre markings, as well as calculated cornering.
- The new version of the BMW X5 is able to see what you see: Assisted View. Active Cruise Control (ACC), which is activated by BMW, detects traffic conditions around the vehicle in moving traffic. This can even be done in fog. This function offers more comfort and safety – now also in China.
- Traffic information collected in greater detail via Enhanced RTTI BMW Maps allows you to view real-time traffic information Plan routes and predict arrival times with greater precision.
- Spotify podcast playlists are now available in the car through BMW Connected Music. Logging in via the Spotify app in the car and BMW Connected Music automatically activates this feature.
- Enhanced driver detection in the vehicle ensures the correct driver profile is loaded, no matter where the vehicle key is in the vehicle.
- The new BMW M Sound Control for the BMW M3 and BMW M4 promises pure emotion – whether starting the engine, changing gears or switching between driving experience modes. In any case, a customisable interior sound and a unique BMW M Sound Experience is guaranteed.
- Advanced volume control for Android smartphones connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth provides an enhanced sound experience for streaming music or podcasts.

Remote Software Upgrade and rollout.
With BMW Operating System 7 and Remote Software Upgrade, BMW drivers have been able to update their vehicle quickly and easily with the latest software since 2018 – regardless of whether the new software is delivered to the vehicle via the My BMW app or directly over-the-air. The new features can be conveniently downloaded into the car. Installing major upgrades takes only 20 minutes, as the files are automatically prepared in the background.
BMW Operating System 7-equipped vehicles manufactured after July 2021 come standard with the most current version. It also includes all extra functions. Remote Software Upgrade allows customers to view the current software version and search for upgrades. Remote Software Upgrade is now available for more than 30 BMW models – almost the entire BMW fleet. Vehicles that have software older than version 2007 cannot be updated until the intermediate version is downloaded and installed. Installing the latest version of software is not possible.
